John Allen" width="250" height="200" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-11620" />By JJ Hurley, Carrigdhoun Newspaper — At Acton’s Hotel on Wednesday last, the Annual Kinsale Regatta Programme was launched by its long-serving Chairperson, Mr. Ted Mc Namara.

Addressing the large audience, including Chairman of the Harbour Board, Mr. Kevin Murphy, Mayor of Kinsale, Mr. Micheal Frawley and a number of the local town councillors, Mr. Mc Namara praised his fellow committee members for their hard work in putting together such a jam-packed programme, which runs from July 25th to August 7th.

In addition to a number of firm favourites, this year’s Regatta will also host a Battle of the Bands Competition.

Running for four consecutive nights- Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday- at the local Town Plaza at 8pm, the event is open to any musical group, with prizes for the best Under 21 Band or Group, best Over 21 Band or Group and the Best Traditional or Ceili Band.

Any group wishing to enter the competition should contact kinsalebattleofthebands@gmail.com as soon as possible as places are limited.

Paying tribute to the new musical initiative as part of this year’s Regatta programme, Mayor of Kinsale, Mr. Micheal Frawley, said: “It is a welcome addition to an event, which is indeed a special weekend for the people of the town.”

Certainly there was a consensus among all those who attended Wednesday night’s launch that Kinsale Regatta is a unique event providing entertainment for the entire family, including the Children’s Regatta at Sandycove on Saturday, July 31st starting at 10am.

Kinsale and Dock Yawl Rowing Regatta will take place on Sunday, August 1st beginning at 11am, and later on Sunday evening the children’s fancy dress will assemble in the Car Park at the Glen at 8pm. On Monday, 2nd August, the Children’s Races and GAA skills competition take place in Kinsale GAA Club Grounds, starting at 11am.

Of course being a Regatta, a significant sailing programme is also a part of the festivities, with sailors competing in a number of events, organised by the local Yacht Club and Kinsale Harbour Master, Mr. Phil Devitt.

Also adding to the nautical theme of the Regatta – which has been organised in the town since 1776- is a visit from the Courtmacsharry Lifeboat on Monday, 2nd August. The visit will be preceded by an open day on Sunday, 1st of August at Kinsale Inshore Lifeboat Station.

For the land lovers, street entertainment and band recitals will be part of the programme on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, while the Landlubbers Boat Race at the Pier on Monday at 2.30pm followed by the water carnival is certain to attract a large audience.

Finally, two events which have become synonymous with the regatta are the annual Regatta Road Race, which takes place on Friday, 30th July beginning at the GAA grounds at 8pm and the Emigrants’ Welcome Home at the Municipal Hall hosted by Kinsale Town Council on Tuesday, 3rd at 7.30pm.

Tomas O’ Brien — Kinsale has had a court in town initially on a monthly basis, but with the arrival of Judge James Mc Nulty this has been increased to fortnightly. This did away with long waiting lists and cut down the time wasted by all concerned. The judge is doing a great job and a loss of the court would dilute his work.

Better facilities are needed by the Judge, Garda, solicitors, and the general public. Everyone deserves some privacy, rather than discussing their cases on a stairs or a car park.

The facilities in Kinsale are no longer adequate and need up-grading.
If Kinsale loses the court it will impact negatively on the town both socially and economically.

John has long been an advocate of Clear Skies and wants to help people reconnect with the night sky. Light pollution has robbed us of the simple beauty of a sky full of stars, not just pinpricks of light but distant suns ablaze with colour and wonder.

Luke chose the element of Water, where he has worked and played for years, and captured the intimate moments that have always connected people to the sea.

Luke and/or John will be available to discuss their work on Sat 10th and Sun 11th and from Thurs 16th to Sun 18th. If for any reason we have stepped out for a moment, please feel free to call Luke 353 (0)86 173 0871 or John 353 (0)86 216 2990 and will ensure we are with you promptly.

Hope to see you there!

Designed by local sculptor, Mr. Patrick Barry, the seat is described as a fresco containing all the important symbols of the Belgooly Church, including the Stations of the Cross, baptismal font, altar railings, church door and front façade of the house of worship

The seat, which took six weeks to complete, and is made from Kilkenny Monumental Limestone, is inscribed in Irish at the rear with the following inscription: ‘Ceanfaimid Cochrann an chreidhimh a casa sinsir romhainn.’

Directly translated, the inscription reads: “Follow the torch of faith lit by the forefathers.”

This theme was directly taken up by local Parish Priest, an tAthair O’Murchu, who officially opened and blessed the new seat, remarking : “Many previous parishioners of Clontead Parish had great difficulty in professing their faith, attending local Mass Rocks during the Penal Laws or later attending the smaller chapels at Ballingarry or Clontead, which sprang up after Catholic Emancipation.”

However, by 1909, the then Parish Priest of Clontead, Canon John B. O’Brien, decided to construct a church on the highest point of Belgooly, symbolising the emergence of the Catholic faith as central to the life of the local community.

During his address, an tAthair O’Murchu also called on the local community to attend mass on a regular basis and he made a special appeal to those who do not attend Mass to return to the sanctum of the church.

He also paid tribute to the seventeen members of the local Parish Council for all their hard work over the past few months.

Chairman of Clontead Parish Council, Mr. Sean Skully, agreed with the Parish Priest’s sentiments and he had particular words of praise for Mrs. Mary O ‘Regan, Mr. Cathal O’ Shea and Mrs. Noreen Brady.

The significance of the occasion was not lost on Mr. Skully, describing the celebration as a very important link between the present and the past.

Mr. Skully was also keen to emphasise that Saturday’s ceremony, with the involvement of the Parish Council, demonstrates a new departure as the Church faces into the next hundred years.

Following the ceremony, mass was celebrated in the Church by Bishop Buckley, Parish Priest, an tAthair O’Murchu, Fr. Daniel Burns P.E. and a number of clergy from the diocese with Fr. Charles Kiely delivering the homily.
