The Bands
Ian Briggs and the Supervampers
Ian Briggs - the celebrated British harmonica player - is returning to the Wharf Tavern for the 16th year. Ian’s band, the Supervampers, features Dave Sheen on drums & vocals, Jim Crawford on guitar and vocals and Tony Coddle on Bass Guitar.
Once again they are broadening their appeal ith the return of ‘Doc Fingers’ in the band line-up. Special appearances by Kim Nishikawara on saxophone promise an unforgettable, foot-stomping line-up.
Doc Fingers and Ian Date
The pianist who says that he has a ’special place in my hear for the blues’… what more needs to be said, except perhaps, that as a regular guest of the near legendary Ian Briggs sessions at the Trident Hotel, he’s a welcome addition to the festival line-up. Canadian-born Doc is based most of the year in Switzerland but this prized pianist is coming out of the woodwork to play the friendliest jazz festival in Europe.
Ian Date is a master of the acoustic steel string guitar. He draws upon the influence and ability to move through the gypsy jazz genre that was begun by Django Reinhardt in the 1930s. This is accessible music played with great flair, style and panache, always melodic, lyrical and groovy.
Dave ‘The Prof’ Bolitho & Shufflebones
Dave and his band create their musical mayhem of rocking blues with a pinch of Cajun, swing, boogie… Dave is joined by Rawden Johnson on bass guitar, Ian ‘Shorts’ Rankin on guitar, mandolin and flute and Dave ‘Pink Face’ Eustace on drums and vocals extraordinaire.
Ronnie “Sinatra” Costley
Close your eyes, relax and listen and tell yourself that Sinatra is not right there on stage. Not to be missed!
Brid McKenna
The girl with a powerful voice that will make your hair stand on your head! Brid is based in Dublin where she currently fronts a Nat King Cole/Ella Fitzgerald style group. This is the seventh year she will frontline with the Cork City Jazz Band. Don’t miss her!
Loose Change
Loose Change have become legends in their own right just about everywhere they perform. Formed in 1997 the band has progressed from strength to strength. They started life as a dedicated Soul Band but extensive performing at weddings, corporate events and outside festivals have turned the band into a highly professional function band..
Susan Crosbie
Susan is a resident singer with the Cork City Jazz Band and collaborates with Billy Crosbie on other ventures, including a separate quartet called Billy Crosbie and Friends. Susan teams u with Billy, Ronnie ‘Sinatra’ Costley, Kathy Nugent and Jimmy O’Byrne in performing shows around the country.
The Chili Brothers
Steve Sheppard and Tony Medeiros, aka The Chili Bothers are a driving duo who perform a diverse mix of blues, folk and origiinal tunes that had audiences dancing during last year’s jazz fest. Blue maestro Tony Medeiros got his start playing in clubs in Boston, Massachusetts and is now one of the most heralded guitarists on the east coast. He is a sought after musician who played and sang regularly with Rick Danko of The Band. Tony now performs with top US musicians including members of the David Letterman orchestra. Steve Sheppard is a singer/songwriter from Nantucket Island and has played with Tony Medeiros for 10 yuears. He has written songs included in TV documentaries. He performs most of the vocals in the duo and as crowds during the last two Jazz festivals have discovered, his repertoire includes melodies from John Pride to Bob Dylan to Nancy Griffith and beyond. One thing’s for sure, the Chili Brothers play what people love to hear.
Texas Moonbeams
Texas Moonbeams welcome you all to see them at Oscar Madison’s. The whole gang is back and looking forward to another great festival - Tex and Maria, Kent Plums, the Preacher Man, Perrins Moonbeam III, and “Radical” Carl Marks. Tex fronts the band and sings and plays guitar. Extra vocals are supplied by the great Maria Moonbeam. Kent ‘Plums’ Moonbeam plays terrific guitar and contributes the odd vocal (’very odd’ says Tex). Clive Moonbeam’s gospel influenced bass guitar and top session drummer Carl ‘Marx’ Moonbeam drums supply a top rhythm section topped off by the keyboard skills of T-bone Moonbeam. Tex says “Everyone is related. If you want to hear great songs and courageous guitar playing, Oscar’s is the place to be.”.
Gentleman Tim & The Contenders
Festival crowd pleasers for four festivals now… it’s a pleasure to welcome back this London outfit. True devotees of West Coast Swing/Chicago-style Rhythm’n'Blues… hot, sweet and rockin … just as it should be! Wailing harmonica and measured vocals from front man (and ex-Tipperary exile) Tim Corbett is well supported by swinging guitar, pumping double bass and holding all these guys together is dynamite shuffling backbeat! A house-rockin’ outfit that delivers every time… high energy harp and vocals, classy guitar licks and a smooth rhythm section will kick up a storm… so put on your dancin’ shoes, ’cause this crew mean business.
The Hepburns
Local divas for sure, Deirdre McCallum and Christine Murdock, vocals and keyboard respectively. Playing the works of Joni Mitchell, Billy Holiday and loads of cool Motown soul recordings. Quintessential Soul and R&B! Deirdre was discovered by no less a genius than Mr Billy Crosbie. Classically trained keyboard player Christine provides the musical tapestry.
Lady and the Tramps
Fronted by local diva Sharon Crosbie, this legendary chanteuse is ably supported by Michael O’Neill on keyboards and Sean Devitt on drums. Always a popular entertainer on the Jazz Trail, this line-up has a well-deserved reputation to live up to… no doubt they’ll deliver the goods.
Billy Crosbie Quartet
It’s said that Billy can make the piano talk. When it does, it usually says “Don’t give up the day job!” Billy Crosbie has been involved with the jazz band scene in Kinsale for 20 years. He was instrumental with some Kinsale Vintners in setting up and maintaining the Kinsale Fringe Jazz Festival which runs concurrent with the Cork JazzFestival. He’s a founder member of the Cork City Jazz Band. Be warned his annual diet run coincides this year with the festival. Approach with caution.
Julian Piper
A slide guitarist with few equals, Julian Piper blends the raw sounds of the Mississippi Delta Blues and syncopated rhythms of New Orleans in to a unique and seductive musical cocktail. Julian’s guitar features on two Memphis WC Handy Award winning albums - the equivalent of the Oscars, and he produced an album for Sixties icon Dave Berry on which his slide guitar was praised by Mojo magazine.
Stringfellows
The band plays a selection of blues and jazz from Bonny Riatt to an occasional Ray Charles. Guitarist Ray Taff Willliams has been described in Guitar Bass magazine as one of Eric Clapton’s favourites. Joining Ray are Anthony on bass guitar, Kelvin on drums and Kelly Elliott on lead vocals, all of whom form the basis of a sizzling 4 piece unit.
The Cork City Jazz Band
The Cork City Jazz Band’s founding players evolved from other bands in the Cork area. Only three of the originals remain, namely Marco Petrassi, Billy Crosbie and Gerry Walsh. They have been playing together for 20 years, and for eighteen of those they have been delighting the crowds at Acton’s hotel every Sunday.
The Frets
The Frets as a duo have been together for just over two years, combined the guys have over 40 years of music playing under their guitar straps. They play a huge variety of styles from jazz swing to blues, bluegrass and contemporary. They are realy entertainers and always have great interaction with the crowd. During the year they travel extensively through Scandinavia playing music where they are received by roaring crowds.
Craic Hoors
These guys from Australia have been coming to Kinsale for many years, now appearing to us under different band names. You may have heard of such bands as The Liars and The Torpedoes - well now they are the Craic Hoors. The jazziest things abotu these guys are their haircuts, but they are electrifying entertainers playing blues/rock with attitude and passion.
Sangre Latino
Sangre Latino have been playing at many venues and festivals in and around Ireland for almost three years now. Sangre Latino’s music is a fusion of many styles, including Latino Jazz, salsa, samba, reggae, Afro beat and funk rock. Their set includes numbers from the Buena Vista Social Club, Bob Marley, Manu Chou and original tracks.
