Kilkenny Youth Orchestra In Kinsale
Kilkenny Youth Orchestra come to Kinsale this Saturday 17 May at 7:30pm in St Multose Church.
The Kilkenny School of Music opened in 1982 with 2 teachers and 38 pupils. A year later there were over 200 pupils and 6 teachers. From the start the emphasis was on making music together. A junior string orchestra and a wind ensemble were formed in 1984, which developed and led to the foundation of the Kilkenny Youth Orchestra in 1998. The Kilkenny Youth Choir was established when the School began, and has grown steadily.
The Smithwick’s Choir was founded in 1992, extending the School’s work to adults. In the same year the Youth Orchestra made its first exchange, with a German youth orchestra. The Youth Choir and Orchestra now make a foreign exchange every two years, and have gone to France, Belgium, Norway, England and Wales as well as joining with Irish groups from the North and South.
To allow for further development, the basement in the School was renovated in 1998, giving 2 new teaching rooms, store room, pupils’ waiting room and an office.
